Then Bun arrived. Its native C++ package engine resolves and installs packages in milliseconds instead of minutes.

The Catch? Muscle Memory & CI Friction

Developers still naturally type
npm install
,
npx
,
yarn add
, or
pnpm
.

Shell aliases like
alias npm="bun"
fail on npm-only flags (
--save=false
), package lifecycle scripts, or Yarn PnP workspaces.

You can't rewrite every teammate's habits or company CI configuration overnight.

That is why I created bunpm — a zero-runtime-dependency CLI that transparently maps your standard package manager commands to Bun at lightning speed, with a fail-safe fallback to the original manager when a command cannot be mapped 100% safely.

⚡ How It Works

bunpm
installs lightweight native shims for
npm
,
npx
,
yarn
, and
pnpm
. When invoked from your terminal or scripts:

Command Executed

Transparent Routing

npm install

➔
bun install

npm install express

➔
bun add express

npm run build

➔
bun run build

npx prettier --check .

➔
bun x prettier --check .

yarn add react
/
pnpm add react

➔
bun add react

🛡️ The Fail-Closed Fallback Guarantee

Whenever you run a command that Bun cannot map with 100% parity — such as
npm audit
,
npm publish
,
npm version
, or Yarn PnP nested workspaces:

bunpm never guesses or breaks. It automatically and silently hands off execution back to native
npm
,
yarn
, or
pnpm
.

Zero broken builds. Zero disrupted workflows.

🏗️ Architecture & Engineering Highlights

Zero Runtime Dependencies (
"dependencies": {}
)
Built strictly with pure Node.js (CommonJS, Node 16.9+ compatible). No bloated
node_modules
footprint on your global system.

Bounded Buffer Streaming (64 KiB)
CLI output is streamed and formatted line-by-line. To prevent memory bloat on giant dependency trees, output falls back to raw passthrough beyond 64 KiB.

POSIX Signal Forwarding
Cleanly passes
SIGINT
(Ctrl+C) and
SIGTERM
directly to active child processes without leaving orphan processes or corrupted terminal state.

Enterprise-Grade Test Suite
99 test suites across Ubuntu, macOS, and Windows with strict coverage gates (100% statements, 100% functions, 100% lines, 96.4% branches).

🚀 Quickstart Installation

Clone and install with one command:

git clone https://github.com/yv3000/bunpm.git
cd bunpm

Linux & macOS:

bash bunpm/platforms/linux/scripts/install.sh

Windows (PowerShell):

powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File .\bunpm\platforms\windows\scripts\install.ps1

Verify Your Environment:

bunpm doctor

Once installed, simply type
npm install
or
yarn add
like you always do — and enjoy Bun's speed immediately!
